12 Ways to support a small business

We like to refer to it as the ‘Bama affect. Households across America are talking it. Moms are following it like it’s a royal wedding. Colleges around the country are trying to hop on the trend. It’s a social media movement like no other. It’s called…’Bama Rush Tok. In a nutshell, Bama Rush Tok is a trending hashtag on Tik Tok that follows the sororities at Alabama as they navigate their way through rush. From work week to bid day, the entire internet is constantly scrolling the hashtag to check for the OOTD (outfit of the day), to see the work week themes and search the internet for the Kendra Scott jewelry worn in the videos. How did one sorority row beat the algorithm? How did one college become the most searched term on the internet? How did one sorority show up in a 39 year old California housewife’s Tik Tok “for you” page? Simply put, it’s what we’ve been screaming from the rooftops for years. 

If you can convince the masses to talk about it, the algorithm will follow (whether it wants to or not). 

Posting on social media is practically (if not actually) a requirement for Alabama sororities during work week and rush. Their goals are to get followers and likes and become a trending hashtag. We can see that they succeeded. The sororities worked “separately but together” to get the Nation talking about their rush. They use the same platforms, the same hashtags and the same overall themes/dances/posts, but they do it a bit competitively to stand out from the other houses. 

But, enough Bama Rush Tok (whoops) talk. Let’s talk about how a business can beat the algorithm using the same Bama Rush Tok methods. 

Here’s the #1 goal: GET YOUR CUSTOMERS TO TALK ABOUT YOUR BRAND. Not because they HAVE to, but because they WANT to. Get your customers so obsessed with your brand that when they hop into bed after a long day, they stay up an extra 30 minutes scrolling your social media feed. 

But how can you do it? Here are a few ways to start…

Step 1: Answer this question first. Who are you? We know the basics about your brand (such as what you offer), but why do you offer it and what makes you stand out from the rest? As the brains behind the brand, what are some of your own interests? Examples include: fashion, lifestyle, food, fun, culture, etc. Once you answer this question, you will identify the proper voice for both you and your brand. 

Step 2: Discover your allies in the industry. Historically, sororities are very competitive. However, with Bama Rush Tok, they found a unique way to streamline their efforts into one very successful hashtag and succeed as a whole through friendly competition. How can you incorporate this into business marketing? Let’s say you own a coffee shop, but you operate next to a candy store, a bookstore and a local gift store. Join forces and create a series of videos and posts that promote your area as a whole. Get customers excited to support the entire area. You can also partner with fellow businesses within your own industry and find a way to create a cohesive and friendly way to operate in the same arena, while working together. 

Step 3: Create a customer call to action. If you have customers who love your brand, they will want to support you. They just need a clear and concise way to do it. Work with your industry allies to create a fun way for customers to create content that showcases your brand and why they support you. 

Step 4: Make it FUN! Give your staff and customers branding guidelines, WITH creative freedom. Provide them with the props, the messaging, the vision, your social media goals, branding and the fun where they are excited to visit and make their video or post about your business. 

Power in numbers. It’s always been important and it doesn’t change when it comes to social media. If you can get a group to post about your business, the algorithm will follow.
